What
is Tea Tree Oil?
Tea tree oil is a concentrated plant oil that is distilled through
a steam process from the leaves of a large myrtle tree native to
Australian coastal areas known as Melaleuca alternifolia (or tea
tree). The oil is used as an herbal remedy. Tea tree oil has been
used in Australia for many years to treat skin infections. It holds
promise today as an alternative to antibiotics that are resistant
to certain bacteria; however, there is no evidence that it boosts
the immune system. Tea tree oil is toxic when swallowed and it should
never be taken internally. The Aborigines in Australia were the
first to discover the healing properties of tea tree oil thousands
of years ago. They treated cuts, burns, and skin infections by crushing
the leaves of the tree in mudpacks and applying the packs to the
injured skin. In the 1770s, the British explorer Captain Cook observed
the native Aborigines brewing tea from the leaves and then he brewed
tea of his own to give to his men to prevent scurvy. He coined the
